The Tejeda’s

Scriptures

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 6:33-34

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

LESSON:

I thought it was interesting in Tejeda’s answers they said they didn’t have a collective family verse but that Frank had one and Jennifer had one. However once we saw both of those verses they have a lot in common and really play off each other!

Frank talked about the sermon on the mount where Jesus told us to seek Him first and not to worry and Jennifer talked about Proverbs 3 and trusting in God and submitting the His paths. Seeking His kingdom first and submitting to His paths are really the same thing said in a slightly different way. And Not worrying about the future or what may come your way is really saying that you trust in God and you are choosing not to lean on your own understanding. Two different verses saying a really similar thing; that is Focus on God and His paths and trust that He is taking care of you so you have nothing to worry about!

Discussion Questions

Ice Breaker: Who do you trust the most? That someone in your life you can tell anything to and can keep those secrets sealed?

  1. What area of your life is it most difficult to not worry and to trust God?
  2. If we are honest with ourselves I think we oftentimes struggle with not worrying because we neglect the first part of that verse in Matthew 6:33. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God.” If we are truly seeking His kingdom first it doesn’t leave us a lot of time to worry about the things of this earthly kingdom.
  3. Who is a person that comes to mind when you think about not worrying and trusting in God? If it’s a Bible character, read their story this week and see what they did to take that trust deeper. If it’s a friend, reach out to them and ask them what helped them to not worry or to trust in God more. God has given us examples in the text and in our life of people that do this well so use those resources to grow your own faith in those areas!
  4. In Proverbs 3:5-6 it says we should surrender all of our ways to Him. What does that mean to you? In what area of your life do you need to surrender to God’s ways? Is it in dating? In marriage? In parenting? Are you surrendering to God in how you spend your time and money? Why is it hard to surrender our ways to God?
  5. For me trusting in God and not worrying is a daily struggle. Take some time this week to pray for help in those areas it’s most difficult to not worry about. (A daily prayer asking God to help you trust in Him goes a long way!)
