Scripture
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Psalm 23
LESSON:
Relationship. Family. Those are important words. I loved hearing Mrs Peggy describe Clarksville Highway as a family. Today, our lesson is based on her favorite verse: Psalm 23. Before you begin, read Psalm 23 and replace every “I” and “me” with your name.
Provision
Shepherds guarded their sheep, led them, provided food and water for them, took care of them when they were weary, bruised, cut or sick, rescued them when they strayed, knew their names, assisted in delivering the lambs, and in every way simply loved them. The sheep knew the voice of the shepherd.
Jesus provides the things we need. I shall not want. Green pastures. Still waters. I’ve often read that sheep won’t lie down when they are hungry or drink from fast-flowing streams. Jesus provides still waters and green pastures.
Peace
Beginning in verse 4, David makes a subtle change in his psalm. The pronoun changes from he to you. David begins speaking to the shepherd instead of about the shepherd. The valley of deep darkness are the difficult experiences of life which make us uncertain and afraid. It includes death, but has a broader meaning than death. In our powerlessness, Jesus is powerful. With the rod, a shepherd can repel an attacking beast. With the staff, a shepherd can assist a sheep. We have peace because Jesus protects and assists.
Protection
During the night, theives and animals might attempt to attack the flock. Often pens were made from rock, and the shepherd would sleep at the opening to protect the flock. David pictured a place of honor with his enemies in attendance. Jesus doesn’t always remove the dangers from our lives, but He helps us to overcome dangers, problems, and failures. And our protection isn’t temporay. Our protection is eternal.
Again, read Psalm 23 and replace every “I” and “me” with your name. Jesus is your shepherd.
