Scott & Vickie Biggs

Scripture

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night

The Lord will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.

Psalm 121

I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:13

LESSON:

Scott and Vickie spoke of the difficult times they encountered in life and the importance of leaning on God and your church family during that time. Even the verse that Scott shared had a similar theme to it; Psalm 121 invites us to consider our source of help. I loved how both Scott and Vickie’s favorite verses fit together. Once you know the Lord is your true source of help you realize that you can do all the difficult things you face through his strength and his help.

So what are some of the areas of life where you need God’s help and His strength?

  • Maybe you need the strength to do the right thing and not fall into sin.
  • Maybe you need the strength to keep trying to do something challenging. (accomplish goals, learn to swim, learn a new career, pass those difficult tests at school, etc)
  • Or Maybe it’s the strength to get through scary, sad, or dark times. (afraid of the dark, spiders, storms, sickness, divorce, miscarriage, etc)

Whatever thing you are going through, God’s strength is there for you to make it through. All we have to do is lift our eyes up to the hills where our help comes from. When we do that our maker promises to be with us and give us the strength to accomplish every hard thing in life. The secret to making it through any situation is knowing that Jesus will give us the strength to follow him through any situation—no matter how hard, how tempting, how scary or how sad. And our job in those situations is to call out to him for that help and strength to make it through!

Discussion Questions

  1. In what area of your life are you most prone to try and get through the difficulties on your own? (finances, relationships, parenting, decision making, friendships, etc)
  2. How can you instead lift your eyes to the mountains where your help comes from?
  3. Philippians 4:13 says we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength; so why do we try to do things alone?
  4. What difficulties or challenges are you facing that you need help with this week? Don’t do it alone, you have the Savior of the world willing to help you face the challenge!
  5. The Biggs mentioned that both God and the church community helped them through the hardest parts of life. Who in your faith community do you need to reach out to for help in your situation? Who can you reach out to and offer help?
  6. Wrap up by having everyone in the family share a challenge or difficulty they are going through right now; pray for each other and let them know that they aren’t alone in their difficulty.
